Quireboys :
Ok gotta be careful not to spell their name wrong!
These guys started playing festivals way back in 86/87 When
they started they were called the Choirboys but changed it
to Queerboys after a building site joke about the way they
looked....then they were offered the Reading Fest on the
condition they changed their name to the Quireboys and so a
legend grew....
After playing the festival, the band had a solid
following and released a couple of independent singles,
'Mayfair' & 'There She Goes Again' through Survival
Records.
'89/90 The album 'A Bit Of What You Fancy' followed,
entering the UK charts at number two, and over the next 13
months, the band toured the world. They went to the US,
playing clubs with LA Guns, arenas with Heart and festivals
such as the Gathering of the Tribes (the blueprint for
Lollapallooza) with The Charlatans, Soundgarden, Ice-T,
Queen Latifah, Sinead O'Connor, Cramps, Iggy Pop and The
Cult.
In June 1990, whilst touring the US, the band were
offered a special guest slot with the Rolling Stones at St
James's Park, Newcastle (Spike's dream gig!)
Also back home, the band played to 72,000 people at
Donington Park with Whitesnake, Aerosmith and Poison, during
the Monsters of Rock tour.
And if that wasn't enough, The Quireboys finished off the
year with a memorable gig at the Tokyo Dome on New Year's
Eve with Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Skid Row, in front of 50,000
people.
Tramps & theives was released toward the end of 1992
but grunge had taken over the charts and although going
platinum in Canada was great their chart success locally was
not as massive as their Live performances and so they
decided to bow out....until now that is!
THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL . . .
Spike and Griff met up in LA in the summer of 2000 while
Griff was touring with Glimmer and wrote a couple of new
songs. Sanctuary Records heard demos through a friend of
Spike and, much to their surprise, offered the lads arecord
deal. At this point, they weren't going to call the new band
The Quireboys but once Nigel expressed a desire to be
involved, they couldn't be called anything else!!!
Two new members were added from the now defunct Glimmer.
British born Luke Bossendorfer on guitar and Martin
Henderson on drums. And for touring purposes, Keith Weir on
keyboards.
They then started work on a new record,'This is Rock 'N'
Roll',free from the constraints of management, record
companies and producers.
The LP was finished after four weeks rehearsal, three
weeks in the recording studio and was released July 2001.
The band plugged the LP with some low key dates, including a
special show with Status Quo at Hyde Park. After it proved
obvious there was interest from the fans, a more extensive
and successful tour of Canada and Europe in
September/October followed and the rest, hopefully, is
history.
